Malcolm and Marie isn’t winning points for originality. A movie about a couple having a huge argument is probably the most common indie movie plot of all time because it’s cheap but inherently dramatic. I usually like these kinds of movies, but even I can admit the concept has been done so often that it’s become incredibly worn out. Scroll through the indie drama section of Netflix, and you’ll find seemingly hundreds of movies with the same plot. Despite the tired concept, I found myself really enjoying Malcolm and Marie. However, this isn’t a movie for everyone. …

On the face of it, The Little Things has all the pieces it needs to be good. Three stellar actors. Beautiful cinematography. An experienced writer/director who made some of my favorite films of the last decade like The Blind Side and The Founder (if you haven’t seen The Founder you need to; it’s a criminally underrated movie). Despite all these elements, the final product comes out as a disappointment. It commits the cardinal sin of filmmaking: It’s incredibly boring. There’s nothing worse than a boring movie. At least with hilariously bad films , you have something to make fun of…

From Denzel Washington to Ben Affleck, it seems like every actor has the itch to be behind the camera nowadays. Regina King now joins the ranks of “actor turned director” with One Night in Miami. Luckily for her, she picked the right story to tell for the right time.

One Night in Miami is the somewhat true story of the night when Jim Brown, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali (then still known as Cassius Clay), and Sam Cooke spent time together shortly after Ali was named the heavyweight boxing champion of the world. We find them all at different points in…

As far as romances go, Sylvie’s Love is not a movie that’s doing anything particularly groundbreaking. A stoic man and a timid lady fall in love in spite of the woman already being taken is the same plot of hundreds of love stories. What sets Sylvie’s Love apart is that it draws from an old style of romance movies made in the 1940s and 50s. There has never been a romance movie of this style done between two black people as far as I know. …

On the surface, there’s not much to say about Soul that you couldn’t say about any other Pixar movie. The story is fun and surprisingly mature for a family film, the voice performances are incredible with Jamie Foxx doing a great job as usual, and the animation is creative. However, what sets Soul apart is that it’s unquestionably the deepest Pixar movie. It doesn’t make you cry like Coco or Up nor is it as thrilling as the Incredibles. But I can’t say I’ve ever had a Pixar movie make me think about the meaning of life until now.

After a whole decade of being the dominant form of movie entertainment, 2020 is the first year since Iron Man and The Dark Knight came out in 2008 that no new major superhero movies have hit the market (with the exception, of course, being Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot but who watched that). You would think that would leave the public clamoring to watch a new big-budget superhero movie at the end of the year like Wonder Woman 1984 but instead, the excitement for this movie seemed pretty low even before its multiple delays.

The plot of WW84 is pretty basic. Wonder…
